Lake Monroe Tournament - March 16th, 2013 Tournament Story
Last year the first tournament of the year at Patoka lake had awesome weather and very warm temperatures.WOW! what a difference a year can make! This year Lake Monroe greeted our members with brisk, cold, windy, and unstable conditions. The bite and rumor of good bites from the prior weekend were not holding up as tournament day approached. We had an early sign-up at A Summerhouse Inn on the Friday evening before the tournament, and the reports from the teams signing up were not good. Everyone seemed to have a couple of fish located, but the bite seemed to be way off. Earlier in the week Tony Williams had contacted the Board members and let us know that his plane would be landing in Indianapolis from Mexico at 7:00am on the morning of the tournament, from there his partner TIm Dunigan picked him up at the airport and they drove to the lake arriving and getting on the water at about 8:30am, about an hour after the tournament started. Tony and Tim contacted board members, and came to one of the Board members boat and had a livewell check around 9:00am, and they were off to fish. At the end of the day, Tony and TIm came out on top of the field with an impressive 9.38lb. - 7 fish stringer to win first place in the opening tournament for the 2013 season.Tony and Tim were fishing hand tied jigs under a float in 4-6' of water to take the win. Congratulations on a good showing on a very tough day! Great job men!
Finishing in 2nd place with a total of 8.20lbs was the single man team of Noel Thompson. Noel was spider rigging in 4' of water bumping the brush with his bottom bait until he inticed a bite. Noel did an excellent job capturing second place in the heavy wind and cold conditions that made it tough on most two men teams. Noel travels to fish the Indiana Slab Masters from Gary, IN. and has been very faithful to the club. We are very happy to see Noel do well in a tournament! Congratulations Noel on an excellent showing!
Finishing in 3rd is a team who is not a stranger to the top 5, Tom Hankins and Glenn Gill. Tom and Glenn had a total of 8.13lbs. Tom and Glenn were spider rigging 4-6 feet of water using Lake Fork baby shad and shiners to start off the 2013 on the right foot. Tom and Glenn also won the big fish of th day with a 1,93lb. fish.
Tom Hankins with Big fish of the tournament. a 1.93lb. crappie. Congratulations on a very nice fish Tom!
Finishing in 4th place is the always tough team of Don Licht and John Williams with a total weight of 7.43lbs. Don and John were spider rigging in 4-6' of water using live bait. Good job on a great finish!
Finishing in 5th place is th e always tough team of Charlie and Paul Hildreth. Charlie and Paul is another team that is rarely ouf of the top 5 and have made a habit of being one of the club elite teams. Charlie and Paul were spider rigging Southern Pro tubes in purple and chartreuse in the Pine Grove area in 4-6' of water to finish with yet another top 5 and a strong start to the 2013 season. Great Job men!
Thank you to all the teams that made it out. There were a total of 35 teams, with 19 teams weighing fish. there were several 1 fish stringers, indicating a very difficult and slow bite. Looking forward to seeing you all at the next event Cagles Mill (Cataract Lake) on April 6th. Hope to see you out on the water, until then, good luck and good fishing!
